Hummingbird Heaven

Catching a glimpse of a hummingbird can be a spectacular experience.  From their dazzling, iridescent colors to their needlike bills, hummingbirds are among the most fascinating birds in the world.  Here in Ohio, we are graced with the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird.  This winged wonder is tiny, measuring just 3 3/4 inches from the tip of its bill to the end of its tail.  Each year, these birds migrate up to 2,000 miles to and from southern Mexico and Central America.

Hummingbirds can zip along at speeds approaching 60 mph, and nothing grabs their attention like the color red.  Besides keeping sugar water feeders full, there are dozens of perennials, trees and shrubs from which hummingbirds feed and nest.   We have planted and sell Monarda didyma (Bee Balm), Lobelia cardinalis (Ohio native), Buddleia species (Butterfly Bushes), Campsis radicans (Trumpet Vine and native to Ohio), Digitalis (Foxglove), Heuchera (Coralbells) and Penstemons, just to name a few.
